Why Music is Important in Schools

Music is a universal language, bringing us together emotionally, physically and intellectually. From helping mothers to bond with their child, to evoking emotional responses deep within us, music impacts the ways we work, relax, behave and feel. It soundtracks our daily lives, with particular songs often drawing us back into a place of great nostalgia. But more than providing us with joy, music also holds the power to significantly alter our cognitive abilities – developing resiliency of the brain.

Studies have shown that consistent exposure to music can lower blood pressure, reduce heart rates and decrease stress levels. Additionally, recent research conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information revealed that children who undergo professional musical training (i.e. learning an instrument) have far better verbal memory, reading ability and functions such as self-control and flexible thinking.

At Living Waters, we are dedicated to developing the skills and confidence of our students in Music. Through our Music Program, we are able to provide our students with an avenue in which they may hone their craft, develop their creative thinking and experience the rewards and achievements of hard work.

Beyond the obvious mental rewards of music education, we love seeing the positive social impact Music has on our students. From establishing friendships and developing communities, our Music Program has become a hub of innovation, creativity and forward-thinking. As students commit themselves to their craft, they develop the ability to express themselves and explore practices beyond music theory.

Is your child musically gifted? As part of the College’s strategic initiative to showcase our exceptional Music Program, we are offering Music Scholarships to students who are deeply committed to their love of Music and who will be in Years 7 – 10 in 2023. Students in lower year levels who also meet the criteria are certainly invited to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

At Living Waters Lutheran College, we welcome your musically gifted son or daughter to apply for our Music Scholarship. Applications for the Music Scholarship 2023 are open until 4pm on Monday 22 August 2022.
