Living Waters Lutheran College Vocational Education and Training (VET) program has two components:

  • External (LINKZ)
  • Internal (Auspice)

The Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS) is beneficial for students interested in pursuing a vocational pathway. All VETDSS secondary students are classified under the College’s LINKZ program, so named as it links students to industry.  It allows students to complete a nationally recognised vocational qualification. The program is undertaken as part of WACE and VET courses contribute to WACE graduation. The Year 11 and 12 LINKZ pathway is designed for students who are preparing for entry into training and further education, the workforce, or an apprenticeship or traineeship program.

The LINKZ program introduces students to the world of work. Years 11 and 12 students can learn practical skills and gain an insight into the needs of the workplace. The LINKZ program will make a student a more attractive proposition for employers and give them a head start in their chosen career.

Success in the LINKZ program can potentially lead to immediate employment and later, possible further education such as an associate degree or university studies. The benefits of a student participating in LINKZ program may include:

  • Developing work, employability and life skills and broadening the view of career options
  • Giving a realistic understanding of an industry and its expectations
  • Improved chances of selection for other training courses
  • Making school more relevant to post school aspirations
  • Enhanced personal attributes and skills that employers identify as important.

The LINKZ program is facilitated in workshops and classrooms which offer industry standard facilities and equipment. Students are given hands-on training in simulated workplaces or on-site in the workplace. Students may be required to undertake field trips and participate in the workplace to practice their learning. In addition, classes are not always held during school hours and may even be undertaken across several sites. This gives the student practical skills and theoretical knowledge to guarantee well balanced training.

All students who join the College’s LINKZ program must also undertake a Workplace Learning program if their training only occurs on one day of the week. This provides the students the opportunity to develop skills in the workplace and obtain credit towards their WACE.

Students must find an appropriate workplace and are required to maintain a formal record of workplace learning.  It is the responsibility of the student to find a placement, but the school will endeavour to support this process by providing relevant paperwork and Insurance Certificates. Students must undertake Workplace Learning on the day they are not attending their Registered Training Organisation for training. Transport to and from the workplace is the responsibility of the student/family.

Students have no study program at school on their LINKZ study days and are not allowed to attend school on these days.  This requirement is in line with our duty of care and attendance policy. Failure to comply will lead to immediate removal from the LINKZ program and appropriate disciplinary procedures applied.

Prerequisite for the LINKZ program
All students are required to have a minimum of a ‘C’ grade average in their Year 10 subjects. A minimum of ‘C’ grade in English and a minimum of ‘C’ grade in Mathematics unless otherwise stated are preferred.

Attendance
Students who participate in the LINKZ program, attend school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The College allocates two days of their Year 11 and Year 12 timetable for students to attend their chosen Registered Training Organisation (RTO), which can be undertaken on a Thursday or Friday. The delivery day of every VET in Schools course varies; some courses are only one day whilst others may be over two days.

The student is responsible for ensuring they attend all scheduled classes with their RTO. Regardless of which RTO a student undertakes studies with, attendance is recorded and any absences are reported to the school. The Curriculum and Pathways Coordinator at Living Waters Lutheran College is contacted to discuss the appropriateness of a student continuing with the program if absences are repeated. Poor attendance of a student of any VET in Schools Program can lead to withdrawal from the LINKZ program. Transport to and from training provider/s is the responsibility of the student/family.

If a student cannot attend their VET in Schools course they need to undertake the following procedure:

  • Contact the lecturer in advance if they know that they will be absent from any scheduled class.
  • Contact the school as per the School’s Attendance Procedure.

Supervision
Students attending RTO will be under the supervision of the lecturer instructing the class. However, students are generally not supervised by staff during timetabled breaks. The rationale for this policy stems from the fact that students participating in an external VET program are classified as participating in an adult learning environment.

Assessment Requirements
For many VET Delivered to Secondary Students Programs the commencement date and completion date differ from the school academic calendar. The timetable is modified in order to ensure completion is prior to the end of the school year. It is important that students complete assignments/assessments on time because their results must be recorded in line with the School Curriculum Standards Authority Resulting procedure. Failure to adhere to this will have a negative implication on the student’s ability to use their vocational qualification towards achieving their WACE.

Reports and Results
Students will receive an academic report (generally at the end of Semester One) from their Registered Training Organisation detailing how the student is progressing and level of competencies achieved. At the end of the year, each Registered Training Organisation provides the student with an official confirmation called a Record of Achievement.

What do students wear and are there any other expenses?
School uniform is not worn to the chosen course, but students are expected to dress appropriately. Certain courses require special or protective clothing and/or footwear and this must be worn. There may be additional expenses incurred for some courses in terms of uniform and textbooks.

It is a requirement of our College that students who successfully undertake enrolment with a Registered Training Organisation under the VET Delivered to Secondary Students Program must sign a LWLC Vocational Education & Training LINKZ program Contract.

How to apply for the LINKZ Program?
Parents/students apply directly through the RTO. The Careers Department are available to assist. Documents such as printed reports and OLNA results can be requested from Student Services.

Information will be sent to parents via e-mails alerts regarding the qualifications on offer, the application process, approximate timelines and the closing date of each RTO’s VET in Schools applications.
