What does the future of STEM learning look like?

LWLC’s STEM Specialist Program goes beyond traditional classroom learning. It is about more than memorising facts or formulas; it immerses our students in STEM with hands-on learning experiences that challenge and inspire their problem-solving and critical thinking skills; fostering a deeper engagement with STEM concepts.

Since the Program’s launch for Year 7 students in 2020, our passionate STEM Department have delivered a dynamic curriculum for talented students. It’s a Program that STEM Specialist teacher, Mr Sam Massey stands behind; “I enjoy the STEM program as it provides students with an opportunity for hands on learning which is relevant to contemporary issues facing our society.”

It is a sentiment that is echoed by our students. When asked about his experience within the Program so far, Year 7 student, Flynn, said “The more I learn in STEM the more curious I become.”

By inspiring students’ curiosity through dynamic and interactive learning activities, students are not only retaining the information they are learning – they are also enjoying the learning process. Year 8 student, Rylan, said “STEM (at LWLC) is very enjoyable. We have amazing teachers who have taught me so much about coding and math.”

Current students strongly recommend that their peers consider applying for the program, with Marcus (Year 7), reporting that “STEM should be called STEMF; Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths, Fun!”

Whilst the Program holds numerous academic benefits for students, it is also helping them to develop essential workplace skills such as collaboration and communication. Samuel (Year 8), said that “STEM tests my teamwork and problem-solving abilities in a challenging way.” It is envisaged that this dynamic and forward-thinking Program will prepare students for a future where the jobs they will be working in do not yet exist. Our teachers are particularly pleased that the Program is sparking student interest in pursuing a career in STEM. Dieno (Year 8) said “(The STEM Program) is a great opportunity to open your eyes to the world of science.” Isabel (also Year 8) said “(The STEM Program) is a great step toward a science-based career because you get to solve real world problems.”
