Help you child achieve study success

Help your child achieve study success

Exam preparation can be a challenging time for both students and their families. Here are simple steps parents can take to create a supportive environment for study success,

1. Healthy habits

It seems obvious, but having plenty of healthy, nutritious snacks at hand and keeping mealtimes regular will go a long way to set a steady routine your child can depend on. Light meals and lots of water throughout the day will help them maintain energy and focus.

Incorporate relaxation and exercise into study breaks. This can be as simple as taking a walk in the fresh air with your child or as a family.

Getting enough sleep is especially important during exams. One way to help your child get a quality sleep may be to agree on ways to avoid their exposure to social media before bed.

2. Keep the calm

Create an organised, calm and quiet atmosphere and study space. Establish a study plan together with clear, achievable goals and incorporate regular breaks to relax and re-group along the way.

Setting study goals that are broken into smaller chunks is a great way to avoid information overload. Encourage a break as each goal is reached – even just a few minutes – anything that gets your child away from the books for a little while.

3. Minimise distractions

Try to plan how you can help minimise distractions. This might include organising additional child-minding, activities (or even additional house-hold chores) for younger siblings. This will ensure the whole family is engaged and supportive and that consistent and solid periods of quiet study time are achievable.

Try to establish clear boundaries around social media and screen time to help your child keep sight of the bigger picture.

4. Set the tone

Managing your own stress will make you better equipped to help your child manage theirs. If you model good physical and emotional habits, you’ll also be better able to cope when your child struggles to cope themselves.

Remind yourself and your teen that this time will come to an end and more importantly, that exam results are not the only way to achieve their goals.

5. Keep talking

Sharing positive observations about how much they have achieved each day can be a huge morale booster and a reminder they are not alone in this journey.

Living Waters Lutheran College recently introduced the Elevate Program where students in Years 10 to 12 undertake high impact study-skills workshops and ongoing sessions throughout the year aimed to improve study skills and performance. Study skills are also incorporated into our Pastoral program, encouraging our students to discover their God-given potential.
